Nature or Chemicals for a snack??

Now you’re probably seeing this title, and thinking what the heck can this article be about? Nature stands for the beauty of the environment, the vast natural resources that were put on this planet for us to consume. Chemicals refer to processed foods Americans are putting into their bodies everyday. Before we get into all that let me first tell you what drew my interest to write this article. I was in the supermarket stocking up with foods for the week (I meal prep every Sunday night) and I saw one of my professors. We talked for a little bit and I couldn’t help but notice her cart. It was chucked full of Tony’s frozen pizzas, Pepsi, and a few bags of potato chips.

Having seen her cart really made me think to myself, how can eating all these unnatural, chemically induced, processed foods be good for our bodies? Were we meant to consume these types of foods as a human race? My answer to that question is a resounding NO, and I have yet to find someone who tells me we were put on this earth to consume Tony’s Pizzas, Eggo waffles and all the other processed and chemically made foods that more than 70 percent of Americans use in their diet each and every day.

Many people don’t know what the actual ingredients are in their favorite snack! What I am going to do here is talk about a popular processed food, depict the ingredients, and then give you guys the top 6 WORST ingredients/additives used in our favorite foods.

Today I am going to focus on Pop – Tarts. (Side note: I went to there website searching for nutritional labels and ingredients and every time I clicked on a new item like blueberry pop-tarts, strawberry ect. a not found page would show up. Hmmmmm that seemed a little fishy to me!)

Now lets dissect this bad boy, as you can see IN ONE thats right ONE pop- tart there are 38g of carbohydrates, 17g of sugar and 200 calories! Now thats absolutely obscene to me, BUT there’s more! That only accounts for one of the TWO pop – tarts that come in the little package and c’mon lets face it, who eats just one pop – tart? Double those number, and there you have it, cold hard body fat. Now lets move on to the ingredients and boy are there a lot of them! 48 to be exact! That’s a whole lot of crap going into your body! Before I delve into the different ingredients I thought I should let you know in case you weren’t aware.You see the ingredients are listed on this pop – tart box in a specific order. This order is based on how much of each “ingredient” is used. So for example there is more corn syrup used than tricalcium phosphate, and so on.

High – Fructose Corn Syrup –
-Potential side effects include: obesity, insulin resistance, increased belly fat and heart disease.

Partially Hydrogenated Soybean and or Cottonseed Oil –
-This didn’t make sense to me, the label says 0 grams of trans fat, if something is partially hydrogenated that’s code name for a trans fat. Potential side effects include: cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.

Preservatives:
TBHQ for freshness – AKA a preservative which can cause tinnitus, vomiting, and nausea.
Thiamin Mononitrate – Potential Side effects – Allergic reactions, possible carcinogen.
Monocalcium Phosphate – Increase shelf life
Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate – Increase shelf life

Artificial Colors:
Red #40
Yellow #6
Blue #1
Caramel Color
Color Added? that’s whats listed as an ingredient
– I find these ingredients they list as really funny. How are we suppose to know what red 40, blue 1 and yellow 6 are? And do we really trust these ingredients health benefits to our bodies? Potential side effects of artificial colors are: allergies, sinus congestion, hyperactivity in children, and they can also worsen the symptoms of ADD and ADHD.

Monosodium Glutamate (MSG):
Modified Corn Starch
Modified Wheat Starch
-This is a hidden form of MSG. See many companies are not putting the actual ingredient Monosodium Glutamate because why would they want someone like me searching the internet for this, and finding that its potential side effects include: Chest pains, heart palpitations, headaches, as well as stimulating are taste buds to eat more.

Artificial Flavors:
-Basically a term that could mean up to 100 possible chemical additives. Potential side effects include allergic and behavioral reactions. Wow is right!

Now to rank the 6 worst additives!

1. High Fructose Corn Syrup
2. Trans Fats
3. Artificial Flavors
4. MSG
5. Artificial Colors
6. Preservatives

Hmmmmm it just so happens Pop – Tarts have each of these categories, now I think I know why its so hard to find nutritional info from them online. I have a question for you now, are you mad? Are you mad companies have been advertising and selling you these products with all these chemicals and harmful products? I can’t understand how companies have the ethics and morality to sell and advertise these harmful products, but hey money talks right? Will you pick up and apple, banana, or whole food now? Or will you still go to chemically enhanced foods? The choice is always yours.
