Does the Number on the Scale Matter ? This Woman’s Side-By-Side Instagram Photos Prove That It Doesn’t Matter

We all expect from fitness coaches, nutritionists, fitness bloggers and similar stars in the get-fit universe to give us reliable advice on making our cardio sessions more effective, cooking our own healthy meals and keeping our metabolic rates at full speed. And all of this in the name of shedding those last couple of pounds in the midsection. That’s why the latest Instagram post by fitness blogger Kelsey Wells came as a surprise for many – it begins with “Screw the scale!”

Kelsey shared three different photos of herself at three different weights – 145 pounds, 122 pounds and 140 pounds. “I weighed 130 [pounds] before getting pregnant, so based on nothing besides my own warped perception, I decided my ‘goal weight’ should be 122 and to fit into my skinniest jeans,” she said in her post. But a couple of months later, she actually gained almost 18 pounds. In the last photo, at 140 pounds, Kelsey looks much more fit and defined than she does in her 122-pound photo.

”You guys, please stop getting hung up on the number on the stupid scale. Please stop thinking your weight equals your progress and, for the love of everything, please stop letting your weight have any effect whatsoever on your self esteem, like I used to”, wrote the Instagram star.

Kelsey did reach her goal weight, but then as she worked out more and focused on becoming healthier, she started to put on muscle which led to a higher number on the scale. Feeling more content with her appearance than ever, she realized that numbers aren’t an adequate way to measure your health and level of fitness.

“THANK GOODNESS I finally learned to start measuring my progress by things that matter — strength, ability, endurance, health, and HAPPINESS,” she explained. “I have never had more muscle and less body fat than I do now. I have never been healthier than I am now. I have never been more comfortable in my own skin than I am now”.

The inspiring post quickly went viral and there’s a good reason for that. As a society, we are still slaving to impossible body standards and we use the numbers on the scale to decide if we deserve to feel good about ourselves. Shaping up clearly has numerous health benefits, but when we’re doing it in a pants size-obsessed way, we might be missing the point.

There’s only one real, cliché-but-true measure of progress – the way we feel in our skin. There will never be a perfect weight that will magically make us feel complete, beautiful and worthy of respect and admiration – those things come from inside, and being healthy and strong will catalyze their effect. Scale numbers and pants sizes are arbitrary things and should not be a reason for frustration as long as we take good care of ourselves and try to be our best.

“To the little teeny tiny voice in the back of my head that still said ‘wtf is this – not 140!?’ last week when I stepped on the scale, I say screw you. And I think you should probably say the same to your scale too”, adds Kelsey in her unconventional post. And we can only hope that more and more fitness idols will focus on spreading positive and encouraging messages like this one!
