Are multivitamins really essential?

Do you take a multivitamin every day? You’re not alone as millions of Americans, including myself, do so. However, I am officially off the multivitamin train as of now! See, after searching around the internet I found something that blew the lid off the multivitamin scam as I see it. I found a simple and very reputable site where you can track every single meal you eat throughout the day.

This site is called: www.choosemyplate.gov. What I found through this site is that after you’re done tracking your meals for the day it will give you a daily nutrients report. This report will give you all the daily values of vitamins, your caloric intake, fat intake, and so on. What I found out next was really astonishing. My vitamin levels, besides vitamin D, were all up to par. Mineral levels, with the exception of calcium, were right where they needed to be. After reading my nutrients report I asked myself: I’m consuming most of these vitamins and minerals everyday from my food, is giving myself double and triple the amount of one certain vitamin or mineral all that good for my body? The answer to me is no.

I know it’s extremely hard to see, but this chart describes what your daily value should be on the left, as well as what you have consumed to the right of it. The third column depicts if you went over, under, or “OK” which means you have met the daily value intake for that particular item.

I am not telling you guys multivitamins are bad by any means. I think they’re good if you don’t eat a balanced healthy diet. I do encourage you all to go to www.choosemyplate.gov and just track one day of your meals and see what your daily value intake is regarding vitamins and minerals. If you are lacking in one vitamin or mineral, I also encourage you to read and research what foods are nutrient rich in vitamins and/or minerals you posses. This will make life a whole lot easier and a whole lot cheaper! You might even save a few bucks a month!
