It’s no secret that fish oil is one of the top dietary supplements. We already know that it can enhance muscle building and help burn off fat, but did you know that recent studies suggest that it can also assist making city life easier?

In a recent study published in Environmental Health Perspectives, researchers at the Chapel Hill campus of the University of North Carolina attempted to determine what effect fish oil supplementation may have on the cardiac responses many healthy adults experience when exposed to air pollution.

In 2011, the World Health Organization revealed that roughly two million deaths worldwide were associated with air pollution. Unfortunately, in spite of regulations designed to reduce air pollution, millions of Americans continue to be exposed to pollution levels considered higher than the United States’ Environmental Protection Agency’s standards.

Over the course of a four-week period, researchers took 29 middle-aged, healthy adults and gave each of them either three grams of olive oil or fish oil. The participants were then exposed to two consecutive hours of unclean air and cardiac responses were measured. Upon assessing the responses to the air pollution, it was discovered that the participants had various acute negative responses including in white blood cell activity, yet the participants who were given the fish oil experienced lesser symptoms. As a result, researchers concluded that the fish oil provided the participants with increased protection against the harmful lipid and cardiac effects associated with the exposure to air pollution.

Needless to say, if you’re one of those people who likes to do your cardio training by running around on big-city streets, this is just one more reason you should consider fish oil supplementation.
